Gyeongbokgung Palace was built in 1395 by Yi Seong-gye, the future King Taejo, as the official palace of the Joseon dynasty. Known as the Northern Palace, it is the largest and is widely regarded as the most beautiful of the five palaces. It was destroyed by fire during the Imjin War (1592-1598) but was restored under the leadership of Heungseondaewongun during King Gojong's reign. After the assassination of Empress Myeongseong, Gyeongbokgung lost its function as a royal palace. Today, it is home to important cultural sites, including the Gyeonghoeru Pavilion and Hyangwonjeong Pavilion. The National Palace Museum of Korea and the National Folk Museum of Korea are located on the palace grounds.
